“The QR-Code Menu Is Being Shown the Door”

I was commissioned by The New York Times to create this illustration for their Food section. The story dived into the study and survey on if QR-Code menus are on their way out with customers embracing paper menus again after the pandemic.

The idea I wanted to portray is that restaurant patrons dine indoors and enjoy ordering food via paper menus, and meanwhile, the other waiters are taking away the “QR-Code“ as floor tiles. And to have this illustration flow better with the texts, I decided to give it a vignette border to have the bottom character walk into the text so the image and article would look unified and cohesive.
