The San Franciscan

“The Other Side of Suffering“

I illustrated this image for The San Franciscan’s featured story of a local open-water swimmer, Chas. The story talked about his training and how he got into swimming in the open ocean with unpredictable conditions and freezing temperatures.

For this illustration, I wanted to compose a dramatic close-up of Chas swimming with his hand foreshortened to showcase the sense of fast moment and the feeling of “swimming with him.“ The article mentioned the danger of this sport so I wanted to take the readers half-submerged in the water to visually experience it.
